Problem!
I added Acrobat security to my source PDF files and ran them through the packager. The sample file works fine, but the full eBook no longer displays and Secure eBooks simply constantly show that window "Waiting for Adobe Reader". If I remove the security settings on the secured eBook, it works perfectly.
It looks like the workaround only works for the sample files, not for the secured eBook. |

I’m not sure what is going on here as (as far as I am aware) I have not had this problem with my eBook, where both the sample and complete PDF files have printing set to “high resolution”. I am being a bit circumspect about this as I have only just launched it and, so far, have only had a few activations.
My eBook can be found at http://www.mahjongbritishrules.com/ebook/Mah_Jong_British_Rules.zip if you want to test it out.
The only difference I found (between the last eBook you supplied and mine) when trying to print the book to a PDF printer was that yours produced a single blank page and mine one blank page then another with the following: ERROR: undefined OFFENDING COMMAND: get STACK: /quit -dictionary- -mark.
Perhaps you need to contact support@secure-ebook.com to get to the bottom of this. |

It seems to me that Secure-ebooks, while otherwise a decent enough product, is totally insecure.
Any number of .pdf printer drivers will defeat the described method above - I know because I've tested them. (I'll refrain from saying which ones.)
Of course, this is better than nothing, but it hardly instills confidence.
There must be some way of blocking pdf printing while allowing printing to physical printers.
Come on SEB; let's fix this loophole!

After I posted, I did find another thread elsewhere on this forum that also led me to believe that we don't have a way to solve this.

It's a great pity this isn't being addressed.
If you print to a non-standard .pdf printer driver (one that prints as an image instead of text), you can create a perfect unsecured copy.
There are ways to defeat this - I have seen eBrary Library Resources do this - i.e. prevent printing even to a non-standard .pdf printer driver.
So Secure-eBook should look into this. Or call itself something else.
It's not a bad system otherwise... |
